As many of you know my wife, Kelly, in addition to being my fantastic assistant, is also a speech and special education teacher in Chilton County. So this particular cause is very dear to us. In addition to photographing the event, I also photographed the teachers and children working together at Children's Hospital and Mitchell's Place. I will tell you that as a parent seeing these children and their families breaks my heart and helps me to remember just how lucky Kelly and I are to have healthy children. I give thanks to God every day for that blessing. Because I am so blessed I feel called to help in any way that I can. It is gratifying to know that I am able to contribute with my talents. However small that may be.
As for the event itself, it was held at the beautiful Harbert Center in downtown Birmingham. The evening began with hors d' oeuvres (that were delicious) and wine from Rush Vineyards who was also a sponsor.Bidding on the many many silent auction items was slow at first. That all changed as the time to end bidding drew near. It was a mad rush and some shrewd strategy to get the treasures they coveted most. After a very lovely dinner the live auction began. Vacation packages, interior design, a chef catered party, and even a dog were all up for the taking. If you have never been to a live auction before, I will tell you that it is quite an experience! The gamesmanship, the show, and the excitement was a lot of fun to watch, especially since I was in no danger of winning anything. At the end people started making large straight donations to the Charity League with nothing more than a tax deduction in return. I was proud to be a part of it and look forward to doing it again next year!
